Engineering Materials (KMAT)

Students, professors and researchers at the Division of Engineering Materials explore the relationships between microstructure and properties of mainly metallic materials but also ceramics, composites and polymers for engineering applications.

We are giving courses in materials science and engineering at both basic and advanced levels to around 400 engineering students each year. Since materials science is a practical subject we combine theoretical studies with hands-on exercises within our laboratory.

Our undergraduate courses are taken by students on engineering programmes:

Mechanical Engineering,
Design and Product Development Engineering,
Energy, Environment and Management,
Industrial Engineering and Management,
Master programme in Mechanical engineering.

It is also possible to make a thesis project within the subject Engineering Materials; either in a company or within our laboratory. Please contact Johan Moverare if you are interested.

Research

Our research leads to the synthesis of improved materials. We study the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties, environmental impact and degradation of material properties, and fatigue and durability of material under service like conditions.

Mechanical properties of structural materials

We work with a series of advanced mechanical tests methods to determine the mechanical properties of a material. By combining these methods with microstructural investigations we can study the active deformation and damage mechanisms.

Surface engineering for performance and durability

What can be done to protect metallic components operating at high temperatures? how can we increase the fatigue resistance of structural components? Surface modification for better performance and durability is the main focus of our research.

Additive manufacturing

3D-printing will have a huge impact on the manufacturing industry in the years to come, and a better understanding of the material properties of AM manufactured parts is vital to fully utilize the potential of this fairly new technology.

Mechanical Engineering is a discipline of engineering sciences based on classical mechanics. In a broader sense, it covers disciplines from product development and design engineering to construction materials and computational mechanics.

LiU establishes new infrastructure for materials research

A new Swedish research infrastructure for additive manufacturing (3D printing) and the finishing and qualification of components in tungsten for future nuclear power is being launched. LiU has been appointed coordinator for the MJOLNIR project.
