Purpose and objectives
Hydropower is a key component of the Swedish energy system and plays a central role in balancing electricity generation from weather-dependent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. At the same time, digitalisation and artificial intelligence offer new opportunities to improve water regulation.
The project aims to develop AI-based decision support methods that provide better support for planning water regulation and hydropower generation. The objective is to increase electricity production, reduce water spillage and create better conditions for a robust and flexible energy system.
The project focuses, among other things, on flow balancing in water regulation systems, decision support for water regulation, the economic benefits of AI-based models, and how hydropower can interact with wind power, solar power, and other energy sources in the future electricity system.ÌýExpected outcomes and societal impact
The project is expected to contribute to more efficient hydropower generation through improved forecasting and AI-based decision support. The results have the potential to increase electricity production, reduce water spillage and improve the ability to balance an energy system with a growing share of renewable electricity generation.
The project will also strengthen knowledge of digitalisation and artificial intelligence within the hydropower sector by disseminating its results to energy companies, operations and maintenance personnel, and other stakeholders in the energy sector. In the longer term, the results are expected to increase digital maturity and provide a foundation for future research and innovation projects.
