Assistant Professor Aiman Rahmanudin is a research leader in the Soft Electronics Group focusing on developing sustainable functional materials and device concepts for soft and stretchable energy applications.

Research Interests

Assistant Professor Aiman Rahmanudin leads research on sustainable soft energy materials in the Soft Electronics Group at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics. His research focuses on developing new material and device concepts for soft electronics, with a particular emphasis on energy storage, sustainable materials, and scalable manufacturing. A central theme in his work is to rethink how batteries and electronic materials are designed so that they can bend, stretch, flow, degrade, or be manufactured from renewable resources. His research includes redox-active electrofluids for shape-adaptive batteries, soft and stretchable battery architectures, biodegradable battery components, and biomass-derived laser-induced carbon electrodes from lignin and other biopolymers. Aiman’s work combines materials chemistry, polymer science, electrochemistry, laser processing, and device engineering. He is particularly interested in how molecular structure, microstructure, and device architecture can be designed together to overcome the mechanical and sustainability limitations of conventional energy devices. Alongside academic research, Aiman works actively with innovation and commercialisation. He is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of , a Linköping University spin-out developing printable gold nanowire inks for transparent, flexible, and stretchable electronics. His broader research vision is to translate fundamental materials discoveries into practical technologies for next-generation sustainable electronics.

Academic Background

Aiman obtained his MChem degree in Chemistry with Business and Management from the University of Manchester (UoM) in the UK, in 2013. He then pursued his PhD in Chemistry at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland under the supervision of Professor Kevin Sivula researching on organic semiconductors for optoelectronic devices. After completing his PhD, he went back to UoM as a postdoctoral research associate at the Organic Materials Innovation Centre to focus on developing green synthesis and processing methodologies for large-area organic electronic applications. He joined the Soft Electronics group at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics in Linköping University with Professor Klas Tybrandt after being awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Seal of Excellence research fellowship by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA). Since then, he has expanded the research direction within the Soft Electronics group from soft and stretchable electronic materials and devices to include soft energy devices. In late 2024, he was awarded the Zenith Career Development Grant from Linköping University and was promoted to Assistant Professor (Biträdande Universitetslektor) in 2025 and became a research leader in the Soft Electronics Group.
