Back to available jobs
Ref LiU-2026-02207

Do you have experience in programming and an interest in aviation, logistics, and sustainability? We are now seeking a PhD student in Aviation Logistics, offering a unique opportunity to combine advanced modeling and analysis with real-world applications in an international research environment. You will be part of a research project focused on developing more environmentally efficient arrival procedures at an airport.

Your work assignments

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.

You will contribute to a research project focused on optimizing arrival procedures at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The project aims to enhance the environmental performance of flight operations by developing and assessing more efficient arrival strategies.

Your work will include analyzing and modelling new operational concepts, as well as evaluating their impact on air traffic management. A particular emphasis will be placed on understanding how these changes affect the workload, decision-making, and overall performance of air traffic controllers.

Your qualifications

You have completed a degree at an advanced level in Computer Science, Math or Engineering, or completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level or in some other way acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Proven programming experience is required to successfully carry out the tasks within this project. Prior experience in, or introductory knowledge of, air traffic management and airspace operations is considered an advantage. A background in aeronautical engineering—particularly with a focus on aircraft design—is also meritorious.

You are expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, in English.

We are looking for a candidate who shows initiative, takes responsibility for their work, and is able to drive tasks forward with persistence in order to achieve results. Strong collaboration skills are essential; you should be attentive to your surroundings and communicate effectively within a team environment.

You have a strong problem-solving ability and are comfortable working with complex challenges. You are able to understand advanced technical and scientific material and produce high-quality written work. Furthermore, you are proficient in interpreting scientific literature and solving quantitative problems efficiently.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and overall suitability for the position.

Your workplace

You will belong to the Department of Science and Technology (ITN) which is known for its activities in logistics, visualization and organic electronics. We combine academic height with fruitful collaboration with the surrounding society. The position belongs to the division of Communication and Transport Systems (KTS), which is one of the largest environments for research and education in the transport area in the Nordic countries. The operations are conducted within the units Traffic Systems, Quantitative Logistics, Flight logistics, Rail and Public Transport, Mobile Telecommunications, Construction Logistics and Construction Technology. The research is mainly externally funded and is carried out in close collaboration with industry, authorities and society. In undergraduate education, we are responsible for six education programs.

Within the Flight Logistics unit, we apply a systems analysis perspective combined with an engineering-based methodology to analyze, plan, model, and simulate logistics-related problems in aviation. Our research also encompasses related areas such as operational efficiency, sustainability, and decision support in complex transport systems.

The work is carried out in close collaboration with industrial and institutional partners, combining theoretical development with practical applications. Through advanced analysis and simulation tools, we contribute to the development of future efficient and sustainable air transport systems.

We have the power of over 50,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting challenges of today. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world.
